The city of Madison, Mississippi was founded in 1856 as a small railroad community. Though the county of Madison in which it is located is fairly large, Madison the city is only a little less than fourteen square miles but has continually been named one of the best cities in America. In 2008, Madison was named one of the top 100 places to live in the United States by Relocate America, and in 2007, it placed in the top ten of Family Circle Magazine’s “Ten Best Towns for Families” feature. Pioneering these successes, in 2005 CNN’s Money Magazine named Madison, Mississippi the fifty-sixth best place to live in America.
Madison is named after President James Madison, and was used during the Civil War as a headquarters for the Union Army. Today, Madison’s population is 16,930 and the city ranks as the highest income city within Mississippi. Madison has an extremely low crime rate compared to the national average and was voted the “Safest City in Mississippi” in 2001.
Madison has three public high schools and one private high school, St. Joseph Catholic School. Madison Central, the main public high school, is one of the largest public high schools in the state; however, the student to teacher ratio in Madison’s public schools is 19:1. The women’s magazine Redbook named the high school as one of the top ten best high schools in the United States, and due to its test scores it achieved a ranking of “Level 5 (Superior Performance). The City of Madison’s preeminent newspaper is the Madison County Herald.
At one point, Madison considered becoming a “sister city” with Solleftea, Sweden. Because of this consideration and talks between the cities, the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce South Central United States was formed. The organization also encompasses neighboring states. Swedish industrial representatives from Solleftea came to Madison in the mid-nineties to solidify the sister-city relationship between them, and in return Madison sent representatives to Solleftea to observe tourism and city and cultural development.
