Ridgeland was originally occupied by the Choctaw Indians, and was later used as a headquarters for the Confederate States’ Army under General Stephen Lee, the youngest Confederate lieutenant general during the Civil War. Later in the mid-1800’s, what would become Ridgeland was known as “Yellowley’s Crossing” after community founder James Yellowley. Shortly thereafter, Yellowley sold his community to two developers who, in turn, created “Highland Colony” and then “Ridgeland” with plans to encourage Northerners to settle further south. One of Ridgeland’s main roads is named Highland Colony Parkway in homage to the earlier settlement.
